ATEG Journal

ATEG Journal is a peer-reviewed journal, published annually. Seeking to foster discussion and analysis of the teaching of English grammar at all levels PK-16, we solicit manuscripts that describe best practices of grammar instruction. Consistent with ATEG's mission, we promote approaches to grammar instruction that are inclusive and non-discriminatory. We encourage submissions by all who are passionate about English grammar instruction, including university and college faculty members, PK-12 educators, and graduate students.

Types of Submissions
We welcome original manuscripts on the teaching of English grammar, considering the following types of submissions: 

  • NEW FOR 2025! “Hot Takes” (up to 1,000 words describing a favorite successful practice you use in your classroom to bring a grammar concept to life for your students)

  • Reviews of books, textbooks, software, and other teaching materials (500–1,000 words)

  • Theoretical- and research-based discussions of teaching practices, including methods and techniques (3,000–3,500 words, including references)

  • Critical essays grounded in theory/research (3,000–3,500 words, including references)

  • Empirical studies (3,000–3,500 words, including references)

  • Interviews with prominent literacy and language education scholars and PK-16 educators (Please consult the editor prior to submitting an interview.)

  • Lesson plans grounded in theory/research (1,000–2,000 words, including any references)

  • We also encourage presenters at the annual ATEG conference to submit an article version of their presentation. (1,000–2,000 words)

The following are suggested topics related to English grammar instruction: 

  • Methods, techniques, and classroom practices

  • Language change and variation

  • Teacher education

  • Writer’s Workshop

  • Writing, speech, literature, and all forms of discourse

  • Technology in grammar instruction

  • Policies, standards, or assessments

  • Diverse student populations, including multi-lingual learners and emergent speakers of English

Submission Procedures and Requirements
Please follow the guidelines below for all submissions: 

  • Submissions should conform to the word limits noted above. For inquiries about longer submissions, please contact the editor.

  • For article-length manuscripts, include an abstract (maximum 150 words) on the first page. Begin the body of the manuscript on the second page. 

  • Submit manuscripts as Word documents, double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman font. 

  • Attach a separate Word document for related tables, charts, or figures. 

  • Submissions should be formatted according to the guidelines set in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th Edition), including page numbers, references, margins, and headings. 

  • Article submissions (empirical studies, discussions of teaching practices, and critical essays) will be blind reviewed by two referees; therefore, these should exclude author information and any reference to the author in the body of the manuscript.

  • For lesson plan submissions, please contact the editor.

  • It is the author’s responsibility to ensure the submission is original and that paraphrased information and quotations are cited accurately. 

  • The deadline for the next issue is May 31st, 11:30 PM.

To submit your manuscript, please email editor Peggy Wilson (pwilson@umd.edu). In the subject line of your email, type “ATEG Journal Submission” and your first and last name. Attach your manuscript as a Word document, including a title page that includes the following information: 

  • Manuscript title

  • Year/Issue

  • Author’s name

  • Author’s email address

  • Author’s telephone number

  • Author’s biography, up to three sentences

  • If there are multiple authors, include the information shown above for each and indicate the preferred order of authorship.
